The Therapy Process

What you can expect from me

The therapy process is one in which we work together, at your pace, on the issues that you choose to bring. Our first aim will be to build mutual trust and respect, creating a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space for us to explore your thoughts and feelings.

The quality of the relationship and experience of trust and safety within it, together with an awareness of the process in the therapy room, is essential for change to take place. The relationship you have with your therapist is important for two reasons.

This firstly enables you to reflect and explore thoughts and feelings that you have without fearing judgement.

Secondly, through an open, honest and authentic relationship with me, we will be able explore how you relate to others outside the therapy room. Patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving are often played out with me in the therapy room. This allows us to explore your experience ‘in the moment’, in real time which allows for much greater awareness to be developed and real healing to take place.

Transactional

analysis

My core training and experience is in Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy which helps us to understand why you feel, think and behave as you do. It enables you to explore your relationship with yourself, others and the world around you.

Transactional analysis is a form of psychotherapy that, amongst other things, provides us with an understanding of the development of the personality. It enables us to explore our past and see how that might result in patterns in our lives such as strings of broken relationships or lost jobs. Through this we can start to understand ourselves better and make different choices.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

We may also use techniques from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to challenge your assumptions, thoughts and beliefs and gently encourage you to make changes to your behaviours and maybe encourage you think about possibilities of different ways of thinking. With CBT we would be working mainly in the here and now exploring the factors that are keeping your problem going rather than looking back at what caused the problem in the first place.

EMDR

I am fully trained in the use of EMDR therapy in my practice and am a member of EMDR UK Association (membership number 175097). EMDR which can be effective for PTSD as well as the in treatment of many other psychological difficulties including for example anxiety, depression, relationship and attachment difficulties and low self esteem many of which are the consequence of early life experiences.
